Why Box Hill roof cavities overheat

Box Hill's established interwar and post-war brick homes were built with minimal roof ventilation, so on hot days the cavity above the ceilings stores heat that radiates down into the bedrooms all evening. Whirlybirds let that hot, trapped air escape. On the concrete-tile and terracotta roofs common on Box Hill's residential streets we lift the tiles at the vent, cut a neat penetration, bed the flashing watertight, then seat the turbine and reinstate the tiles. A few correctly placed vents make a real difference to how the upstairs feels on a hot day.

Box Hill gets around seven days over 35 degrees a year, and on those days an unventilated roof cavity in an older home holds the heat well into the night — which a couple of turbines are there to release.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Box Hill

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Box Hill whirlybird installation — your questions

Most homes need two to four turbines placed high on the roof to move air effectively. We assess your roof and recommend the right number rather than overselling.
They release the heat that builds up in the roof cavity and radiates into your rooms, easing the load on cooling. On Box Hill's hot days the difference upstairs is noticeable.
Not when flashed correctly. On Box Hill's tile roofs we bed and seal the flashing under the tile course for a fully weatherproof finish.
