Why Carrum Downs roof cavities overheat

Carrum Downs' brick veneer homes from the 1970s and 1980s were mostly built with only basic roof ventilation, if any, so the cavity above the ceiling traps heat through a Melbourne summer and holds it well into the evening. A whirlybird uses the wind to turn a turbine set high on the roof, continuously drawing that hot, moist air out rather than letting it sit. Across the suburb's flat, open streets most roofs get plenty of sun through the day, which makes the heat-load case straightforward, while the more established, tree-shaded blocks benefit just as much from clearing winter condensation out of the cavity.

Flat, open blocks across much of Carrum Downs mean roofs take on a full day of sun, so venting that trapped heat out of the cavity makes a real difference to how upstairs rooms feel through summer.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Carrum Downs

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Carrum Downs whirlybird installation — your questions

Most single-storey homes here need two to four turbines depending on roof area and pitch. We measure your roof before recommending a number rather than fitting a standard package.
Often, yes. Many of Carrum Downs' 1970s-90s homes were built with little to no roof ventilation, so a whirlybird fitted now clears heat and moisture the original design never accounted for.
Not when it's installed correctly. We flash the base into the tile or metal roofing and seal it properly, so the install stays weatherproof through Melbourne's wet winters.
