Why Caulfield roof cavities overheat

Many of Caulfield's period homes have large, timber-framed roof cavities built with little or no ventilation, so heat radiates down into the rooms below well into the evening and, in winter, moisture condenses in the cavity instead of escaping. A whirlybird fixes both problems by continuously drawing air out of the roof space using nothing but wind and convection. Under Caulfield's heavy tree canopy, the moisture side of that equation matters as much as the heat — damp roof timbers under constant shade are exactly the conditions that encourage rot and mould. We lift the tiles at the vent point, cut a neat penetration, bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof, then seat the turbine and reinstate the surrounding tiles to match the existing roofline.

Caulfield's older, densely shaded homes trap both summer heat and winter damp in an unventilated roof cavity — a whirlybird continuously clears that air, easing the heat load in summer and the mould risk in a shaded, damp winter roof.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Caulfield

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Caulfield whirlybird installation — your questions

Most period homes need two to four turbines placed high on the roof to move air effectively, depending on the size and layout of the roof cavity. We assess each roof rather than applying a standard number.
Not when it is flashed correctly. We bed the flashing under the tile course so the penetration is fully sealed, which matters most on the older, more fragile roofing common in Caulfield.
Yes — shaded roofs like many in Caulfield hold moisture longer, and a whirlybird continuously exhausts that damp air from the cavity, reducing the risk of condensation and mould in the roof timbers.
