Why Highlands roof cavities overheat

Many of Highlands' older rural and rural-residential homes were built without any roof ventilation, leaving the roof cavity as a sealed space that traps heat and moisture with nowhere to escape. Under the area's heavy surrounding tree canopy, roofs stay shaded for longer stretches of the day, and combined with rainfall well above the Melbourne average, that trapped moisture lingers in the cavity rather than drying out quickly between weather events. A whirlybird uses wind and rising heat to continuously draw stale, damp air out of the roof cavity, with no power required, pulling in drier replacement air through the eaves. For older rural properties out this way, it's a simple way to reduce the ongoing dampness that a sealed, shaded roof space holds onto.

Highlands combines heavy tree cover with rainfall well above the Melbourne average, so roof cavities here hold onto moisture longer than in drier, more open suburbs, making passive ventilation a genuinely useful upgrade.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Highlands

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Highlands whirlybird installation — your questions

Many of the older farmhouses and rural-residential homes out here were built with no roof ventilation at all, so a whirlybird gives the roof cavity an air path it never had, particularly useful given the area's higher rainfall.
Yes, heavy surrounding bushland keeps roofs shaded for longer, so moisture in the cavity takes longer to dry out naturally, which is exactly the kind of damp, still air a whirlybird is built to clear.
Longer driveways and varied terrain mean travel time between jobs is more of a factor here, but the installation itself on the roof is much the same as any standard tile or metal roof.
